In Loving Memory of Deo Maya Baraily — A Cherished Member of the Bhutanese Community of Greater Cleveland

With heavy hearts, the Bhutanese Community of Greater Cleveland (BCGC) extends its deepest condolences on the passing of our beloved community member, Mrs. Deo Maya Baraily, who departed this life on October 23, 2025. As we come together in mourning, we honor and celebrate a life defined by strength, love, and devotion to family and community. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory bring comfort to those who grieve her loss.

Deo Maya’s life journey began on January 1, 1942, in Bhutan, where she was born to the late Bhagi Maya Ghataney and Ghanshyam Ghataney. She spent her early years in Block Emirey, Village Papgaun, Dagana District, where she built a foundation of faith, kindness, and resilience that would guide her throughout her life.

In 1992, like many Bhutanese families, Deo Maya faced the hardship of displacement and resettled at Sanischare Camp (Hut No. 38) in Nepal. Even amid life’s challenges, she remained a pillar of hope and compassion — nurturing her family, fostering unity within her community, and keeping alive the values of perseverance and gratitude.

In December 2011, Deo Maya and her family began a new chapter in the United States, where she made her home at 7662 Hidden Valley Lane, Cleveland, Ohio. Despite the distance from her homeland, she remained deeply connected to her Bhutanese roots and culture, becoming a guiding figure within the Greater Cleveland Bhutanese community. Her presence was marked by warmth, wisdom, and the gentle strength that inspired all who knew her.

Deo Maya is survived by her devoted husband, Mr. Moni Raj Baraily, and her beloved children: Budi Man Baraily, Tul Baraily, and Santa Baraily, all of Cleveland, Ohio. She is also lovingly remembered by her daughters: Januka Lamgadey of Kalchini, India; Mina Biswa of Cleveland, Ohio; Bishnu Shankar of Cincinnati, Ohio; Durga Shankar of Columbus, Ohio; and Sita Sinchuary of Scranton, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her daughter, the late Hari Maya Shankar, whose memory she held dear.

As a grandmother to 25 grandchildren, Deo Maya’s love and legacy continue to live on through the generations she helped nurture. Her grandchildren will forever carry her spirit — one of kindness, humility, and faith — as they build their own lives in her honor.
